Ocean of Papers is committed to your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights as a user. Short version: we do not require accounts, do not sell data, and your saved papers never leave your device.
Information We Collect
Ocean of Papers does not require you to create an account. We do not collect your name, email address, or any personal identifying information as part of normal use.
We use Google Analytics to collect anonymized usage data — including pages visited, session duration, and general geographic region. This data is aggregated and used solely to understand how the product is used and to improve it. No individual user data is sold or shared with third parties.
We use Crisp Chat to provide live support. If you initiate a chat conversation, the messages you send are stored by Crisp. You can review Crisp's privacy policy at crisp.chat.
Search queries you enter in Ocean of Papers are sent to third-party APIs (OpenAlex, PubMed, arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, Europe PMC) to retrieve search results. These queries are not stored by Ocean of Papers beyond the duration of your session.
Local Storage
Your saved papers and personal library are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers. Clearing your browser data or localStorage will remove your saved papers.
Cookies
Ocean of Papers uses cookies for the following purposes:
- Google Analytics — anonymized usage analytics (can be blocked with standard browser settings or ad blockers)
- Crisp Chat — session management for live chat support
We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings at any time.
Third-Party Services
Ocean of Papers integrates with several third-party services to deliver its functionality:
- OpenAlex (openalex.org) — academic paper data
- PubMed / NCBI (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) — biomedical paper data
- arXiv (arxiv.org) — physics, math, and CS preprints
- bioRxiv / medRxiv (biorxiv.org, medrxiv.org) — biology and medicine preprints
- Europe PMC (europepmc.org) — European life sciences papers
- Unpaywall (unpaywall.org) — open-access PDF links
- Google Analytics — anonymized usage analytics
- Crisp Chat — live customer support
Each of these services operates under its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them if you have concerns about how your data is handled by these providers.
Data Retention
Ocean of Papers does not store personal data on its servers. Your saved papers exist only in your browser's localStorage. Usage analytics data collected through Google Analytics is retained per Google's standard data retention policies (default: 14 months).
Your Rights
Because Ocean of Papers does not collect personal data, there is nothing to request access to, correct, or delete on our end. If you have used Crisp Chat, you can request deletion of your chat history by contacting us at hello@scidart.com.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post any changes on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of Ocean of Papers after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
